My Wish for the World

A topic that has been on my mind lately is how malleable the human psyche is. Our thoughts and our beliefs shape our personality, our identity, our goals and our lives. They are the lens through which we see and interact with life and everyone in it, including ourselves. It is SO IMPORTANT to see how our thoughts and beliefs rule our existence. We have to be able to look at them as an observer, understanding that our culture, our experiences and our observations have CREATED them and that they are not themselves facts. Human beings are the creators of meaning. We give meaning to everything we see, perceive and think. These meanings can trap us or free us. In the best of cases, thoughts and beliefs can help us believe in ourselves, develop amazing dreams and work tirelessly towards them, and enable us to have a joyful, fulfilling life. In the worst of cases, they can make us doubt ourselves, see a void of meaning in life, keep us living small and miserable, or believe that anyone outside our belief system is evil, causing separation and hatred amongst our fellow human beings.
If I had one wish for the world, it would be for everyone to be self-aware enough to understand where their views, thoughts and beliefs have come from. It would be to give everyone the gift of introspection to not just blindly live from day to day on autopilot, but to investigate their thoughts, dreams, life choices, needs and everything else. Being able to step back and look at everything that makes you who you are is a gift of freedom. Things do not automatically change simply because we are aware of them, but we have to be aware enough to see what isn’t working and what needs to change. Only from that place can we understand that change is possible and start to work towards it. Only from this place can we even determine if we want change. Otherwise our thoughts and beliefs are our prison, and we believe them as fact. That is the smallest and most terrible life I can imagine. Not being able to see outside your own box. Especially if that box is dark and painful. What I want most for the world is for people to understand that they can create whatever box they want, and they can jump out of it at any time. It can be scary and disorienting to have no box. But I promise you, you will be much happier once you realize the control you have over your own perspectives.
